Is Twitter a valuable tool for communication or is it just a hype?

I actually joined Twitter two days ago so I don’t have a lot experience yet. But I knew about Twitter a while ago, I heard about it on the news, papers, gossip magazines and so on. I just never really had the feeling to join the ‘Twitterhype’ too. Until I went to study ICM and I had to make a Twitter account for research. Now I think it’s quite fun. You can follow famous people around when they are travelling, you can keep up with your friends..just a shame that almost nobody of my friends owns a twitter account..

I think that Twitter started as a hype, but developed and turned out to be a valuable tool for communication. Twitter goes fast, it can reach a lot of people at the same time and it’s all over the world. As soon as you put something on Twitter everybody can read about it immediately. And more important, you hear the news directly from the insiders, not through the tv-news or papers.

For example, the Dutch site ‘www.irannieuws.com’ made a Twitter-account especially designed for the resistance going on in Iran right now. They made ‘#IranElection’ to show the latest news-updates about Iran. Twitter is the most important source for news because every second they get updates from insiders who are in Iran about what’s going on. While the press from abroad doesn’t have any access to the protest actions of the Iranian population, internet became a huge source to keep the ‘outsiders’ informed.

Daily people upload a hundred of photos and videos on ‘youtube’ and ‘flickr’, but messages are uploaded eternally, especially on Twitter.

The differences between Facebook and Facebook lite

It was all over the news: Facebook launched his new page, ‘Facebook-lite’. The reaction of most of the people? ‘I love it! It reminds me of old times, when everything was less complicated.’ But what are the main differences? And what was so disturbing annoying about Facebook that they had to make a Lite version?

First of all, Facebook-lite was made for the developing countries. In this countries the infrastructure for broadband is limited. Facebook has said that the Lite-version will be simpler and faster because it offers fewer services than the Full-version. The options on Facebook Lite are limited to letting users write on their wall, post photos and videos, view events and browse other people’s profiles. There are no apps or special boxes. Rafe Needleman at technology website Cnet said: ‘It appears, at a quick glance, to be a better site for Facebook newbies or for anyone who finds the current site overwhelming and noisy.’

Lite version of Facebook

As you probably can see, there are less options on the second photo than on the first photo. Is looks less crowded and as you can read in the post below, this Facebook-Lite version would be perfect for me. I am definitely going to try the Lite version. Moreover, the advantage is that, if I’m going to be an expert in the Lite-version and I get bored of the simplicity, I can just easily change to the normal Facebook version!

I joined Facebook about a year ago. The main reason for me was the international possibilities of this internet page. I went to Valencia, and in Valencia I was going to make international friends. With this international friends, I needed to stay in contact, share photos, play games, add comments, tag people on ugly photos and much more which I never found out anyway.

The biggest disadvantage of facebook for me is that I always kinda lose my way on Facebook. If you log in, you go immediately to the big homepage. A crisis of identity hits me. I log in, with my name and my password and all the information of other people is standing right in front of me! I got a ‘Johanna Waksam from Sweden’ who wants to travel to Spain another time, I got a ‘Eva Wiggelendam from Amsterdam’ who got a house in Sevilla, I got a ‘Annejet Klaver who says to Jun Yup Song that she wants to Skype with him quickly’…It’s just so much information about other people that it is overwhelming me, most of the time I quit Facebook as fast as I can.

I’m not the only one who gets sick of Facebook sometimes. ‘Barb Dybwad’ is a professional blogger and works in the Mashable team. She wrote that psychologists confirmed that increased Facebook usage predicts facebook-related jealousy. Does your partner claim he’s working late, but show up tagged in birthday party photos from that night? Do you want to change your status to ‘in relationship with…a loser? Then you’re in good company with this video.
